Welcome to 3rd Grade!
1. Newsletter: The weekly newsletter will be posted on the classroom website (http://mrscchambers.weebly.com) no later than Monday morning.
2. Assignment books: It is very important that you check and sign this book every day – including Friday. You will see not only homework assignments but also reminders about work that is due in the future. If you send me a note in the assignment book, please ask that your child be sure to show me the message. I will be checking the assignment books randomly to make sure that the students are writing down the homework correctly and completely.
3. Take-home binder: All homework pages, completed work, SIGNED PAPERS (which go home on Tuesday) and notes/flyers/letters will be in this binder. Please remind your child to empty this nightly and return the completed homework, signed papers, etc. to the binder and put it in their book bag. Please leave papers that are within the subject areas of the take-home binder where they are; some of these are not completed or may be used for future assignments.
4. Homework: Please expect your child to have homework most everyday. The assignments will be written, by your child, in the assignment book. I encourage you to set up scheduled time every day for homework and for checking over that homework. If you notice your child is not able to complete his or her homework OR if they are having any other problems, please let me know. I will let you know if I see any of the same in class. I will check that they completed their homework each day so it is important that they remember to bring it to school and turn it in. If they miss 3 assignments, they will receive a W on their report card in the area of “completes homework,” after 5 missed an N, and after 8 missed assignments they will receive a U.
5. Spelling: Your child will be given spelling homework occasionally but will need to study the words NIGHTLY. The spelling test will be given on Friday. The test may include words and dictated sentences. We will also incorporate 3rd grade sight words into each week in the form of challenge words.
6. Math: The first quarter will focus on addition and subtraction. We will cover multiplication the last two quarters. The TIMED TESTS will be given on Tuesday of each week, but there will also be practice timed tests given at other times. I believe that the more the children practice, the more comfortable they are with the whole process. Each student will have ONE MINUTE to complete 25 PROBLEMS OR FOUR MINUTES to complete 100 PROBLEMS. Remember that you can go to www.mathfactcafe.com and print out whichever length test you want to practice. There will be a math workbook page for homework most nights.
7. Science/Social Studies: We will work on social studies and science each day. Both include lots of reading, both in the textbooks and in picture and chapter books. We will also incorporate activities, book reports and projects.
8. Bible verse: Your child will be writing the Bible verse this year instead of saying it aloud. Bible verse tests are given on Thursday. Spelling does not count, as long as I can tell what the word is.
9. Handwriting: All work is to be completed in cursive. I understand that we are all a little out of practice. We must practice, though, to get better. We will be practicing handwriting at least 3 days each week and the practice should reflect in your child’s writing assignments. Handwriting errors may result in extra practice sheets in class or for homework. Your child’s handwriting grade will come from designated assignments in other subject areas (i.e. bible verse tests, spelling tests, homework assignments, etc.)
10.Snack/Birthdays: Students may bring a nutritious snack and a bottle of water to school everyday. While we may not have a designated time each day, I will try to include a snack time each morning between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. Please let me know ahead of time if you are planning to send a treat for your child’s birthday. It’s easier to have the party outside when we go to recess or at the end of the day on the other days. Birthday invitations may only be given out at school ONLY if they are for the entire class.
13.Arrival: Please make sure your child arrives at the classroom no later that 8:25 each morning, but by 8:20 if possible. At 8:25 the morning song and prayer begins and the children are expected to already be at their desks and at attention. A rushed feeling in the morning tends to linger all day long. Thank you!
I know this is a lot of information but it should help us navigate through a successful year! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks for your support!
